Day 1.
I had my surgery yesterday. When I went in I was greeted by an adorably and extremely nice Irish woman who gave me Valium to calm me down, seeing as I'm anxiety prone. Within 10 minutes I went from crying hysterically to laughing at paintings and singing to my mom. After changing into my gown, house coat and slippers I met all my surgeons and anesthesiologist, and then walked into the operating room on drug induced wobbly feet. I climbed onto the table. Nurses covered me with warm blankets that had come straight out of a heater, my surgeons laughed, joked, and comforted me...though to be honest I was so high from the mood stabilizers I barley even noticed what they were doing. The doctor had to do my IV twice, once the needle is removed a small tube is all that remains, it doesn't hurt in the slightest and is over quickly. All other meds are injected into the IV tube, so no more needles. I looked up at the older nurse and I felt the strong urge to tell her what a great person I thought she was (valium works wonders!). They told me when they were injecting the anesthesia, and seconds after I felt my whole body go heavy. I don't remember falling asleep, though my surgery lasted 45 minutes. I woke up in the recovery room apparently, though I have no memory of it other then being spoon fed some ice chips by a very nice older nurse. After that I remember waking up in my hospital room. My throat was apparently very sore, but I was so drugged out that I still don't remember that either. All I remember is that I was dizzy because I had a bad reaction to the anesthesia, I was having trouble waking up and being alert, My mind felt foggy as I slipped in and out of consciousness.
My mother was there when I woke up, and I drank alot of water. It hurt to swallow but honestly keeping your throat moist is the best thing. The nurses told me my tonsils were inflamed, infected and full of bacteria and tonsil stones. I was in a semi private room, with one 19 year old girl, her tonsils had also been removed but she was doing much better, as she had had surgery before, in fact she was complaining about wanting real food and talking constantly about gossip...which nauseated me more then the anesthesia.
Her whole family and boyfriend's family were in the room which was bothering me alot as my head was hurting and I wanted rest and silence. I told the nurse my head and throat were hurting and that the anesthesia was making my stomach upset and she gave me a morphine drip with gravol hooked up to my IV, I felt better very quickly. I was able to talk once I woke up. My uvula was swollen, and I took pictures of my mouth and could see scabs forming, white and black. I changed into pajamas and snuggled under the blanket I brought from home. I was brought dinner which consisted of orange jello, a orange Popsicle, vanilla and mango ice cream, and concentrated apple juice. All of which I refused to eat. I tried the mango ice cream and the apple juice but it was too sweet and the ice cream left a thick film of mucus on my mouth which I had to spit out because swallowing hurt too much.
I stayed up with my mother watching tv. My room was in pediatrics because although I am 19 they wanted me to be comfortable, I slipped in and out of consciousness, my father got there with a wendys frosty which I tried to eat but I had no appetite. I just kept drinking water, about 2 liters in total. My parents massaged my feet and gave me an ice pack for under my chin which helped, and a cold wet cloth was draped over my forehead. I was given many bags of IV fluid which, along with the water, made me have to use the washroom often, I wheeled my IV bag, walking was difficult but manageable.
My parents left so I could sleep. I slipped my mouth guard in (I'm a teeth grinder), it fit without a problem, and put in my ear plugs which my parents had provided, I slept sitting up in bed, flat on my back. I woke up many times throughout the night, My IV tube kept kinking causing the machine to beep so I had to keep paging the nurse to fix it. I also drank 2 more liters of ice water which I paged the nurse to bring, and I walked to the bathroom on my own multiple times. I was in alot of pain midway though the night and was given 2 percepts which helped, they were large pills but with mouthfuls of water I was able to swallow them pretty easily.
Day 2
I was awake at 6 30. I Paged the nurse at 7am as breathing was difficult, there was phlegm in my throat, the nurse didn't arrive until almost 8am with graval and morphine, which acted very fast, my uvula was swollen and I could feel it hanging behind my tongue, which was stinging slightly because the doctor had accidentally hit my tongue with the cauterizing tool during surgery, it mostly just felt numb. (*update- my tounge wasn't burnt just bruised from a clamp the doctors use to keep your tounge out of the way*). Breakfast was just as sugary as dinner had been, I refused to eat it, though I was feeling hungry. My father was the first to arrive and then an hour later my mother arrived with purple flowers. The IV fluids made my hands bloated and my back itchy. The morning nurse was dreadful! The night nurse had been so kind and motherly and the morning nurse was rude saying I needed to start drinking water and when I told her I had drank 5 pitchers she didn't believe me. She checked my throat though and said it looked great, thankfully I experienced no bleeding and was discharged at 10am. I came home and watched tv, My parents bought me a humidifier and the mist helped cool my throat, my mother bought me chocolate for after recovery and 12 red flowers. my dad bought me a 50 pound basket of house plants which made me so happy I almost cried and my best friend made me a beautiful hand made vase with flowers, he also texted me and sent me cute elephant videos until I fell asleep. My mother mixed vanilla pudding, and vanilla/ chocolate icecream to make a cold soft serve pudding, which was amazing! I highly suggest it as so far it has been the only thing I could eat. especially because I hate jello and Popsicles.
Ive put two partly frozen freezes in a knee high sock which Ive wrapped around my neck and now I'm sitting with cold water, and my humidifier. I'm taking tylonal 3 with codeine and the pain is being moderated, Though I must say at this point the tonsillectomy has been far better then I had expected.
